According to fresh reports this week, Celtic are set to persist with their interest in a prospect from the EFL before next month’s transfer deadline…
What’s the word?
As per The Sun, the Hoops are poised to bid £800k for Charlton Athletic starlet Alfie Doughty, who is able to play anywhere along the left flank.
They claim that Neil Lennon and Nick Hammond have already failed with two bids but believe a fee just shy of seven-figures will be enough to tempt the League One newcomers into a sale.
Would signing Alfie Doughty for £800k be smart business?
The 20-year-old has less than a year to run on his current contract, meaning the Scottish champions could pick him up on a pre-contract agreement as early as January, which could force the Addicks into making a profit now.
Following the departure of Boli Bolingoli, Lennon is stuck with just one option at left-back whilst it’s not like Moi Elyounoussi has any clear competition up the pitch either.
Therefore a move for Doughty makes a ton of sense and at just £800k, it could prove to be a major coup.
After missing out on Aaron Hickey to Bologna, Hammond can’t afford to falter on another hugely promising sensation.
The versatile starlet has already played a starring role in Charlton’s season so far, playing in all four of their competitive fixtures whilst last season, he provided two goals and four assists, averaging 1.3 dribbles, 1.2 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 0.8 crosses per game, via WhoScored.
Doughty has been lauded as a “tremendous footballer” with a “big future” by former Kingstonian boss Leigh Dynan, who took a punt on him very early on in his career. He added:
“His athleticism caught the eye straight away. He has an eye for goal even playing down the left flank and has a great engine. He does both sides of the game [defending and attacking]. There’s a diamond there to be polished. I can assure you that.”
Whilst ex-Rangers nemesis Alan Hutton told Football Insider that the 20-year-old “ticks all of the boxes,” claiming it would be a good price to get him for under £1m.
He’d certainly be a welcome squad depth option and with such a busy schedule ahead, he would undoubtedly be thrown an opportunity to impress this term.
AND in other news, Celtic could do with adding another centre-back in “phenomenal” colossus…
