Victory is in the DNA of Bayern Munich and they produced another masterclass against Lyon on Wednesday evening to progress into the Champions League final.

Serge Gnabry was the star as the German champions overcame an early Lyon barrage to brilliantly dispatch the French side 3-0 in Lisbon.

This came after they tore apart Barcelona, one of the world’s biggest clubs, with an astounding 8-2 triumph in their Champions League quarter-final tie last week.

The Bundesliga champions still have to defeat a confident Paris Saint-Germain side to secure a sixth Champions League crown – and get this: Neymar and Kylian Mbappe cost more than the entire Bayern squad that faced Lyon. All 23 of them.

Bayern are one of the biggest teams in world football and their ability to spend big has undoubtedly helped them achieve everything they have.

However, the cost of their starting XI against Lyon only amounts to £90,135,000, according to Transfermarkt.

Neymar remains the world’s most-expensive player at £199.8m, while Mbappe set the French champions back £131m.

It’s an astonishing figure which shows how shrewdness in the transfer market can be just as good as throwing a load of cash at the problems in your squad.

In fact, the player they paid the most for is goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who cost £27million, while Robert Lewandowski was a free transfer – incredible.

However, it should be noted the German giants did have a bench which cost more than the starting side.

Bayern Munich’s starting XI vs Lyon cost

*Fees according to Transfermarkt

Manuel Neuer (£27m)

Josh Kimmich (£7.65m)

Jerome Boateng (£12.15m)

David Alaba (£135,000)

Alphonso Davies (£9m)

Leon Goretzka (Free)

Thiago Alcantara (£22.5m)

Ivan Perisic (Loan fee: £4.5m)

Serge Gnabry (£7.2m)

Thomas Muller (Free)

Robert Lewandowski (Free)

Total: £90,135,000

Record signing Lucas Hernandez (£72m) makes up the bulk of that, while Benjamin Pavard (£31m), Javi Martinez (£36m) and Corentin Tolisso (£37.35m) were worth more than the first XI’s overall cost.

So, all told Bayern have spent £330m on their current squad. Which is still less than the £331m Neymar and Mbappe cost PSG.

But the memories of winning the Champions League? Priceless…
