Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron believes Alexis Sanchez was a bad fit for the Red Devils and is more suited to Italian football.

The Chilean ended a nightmare two and a half years at Old Trafford by joining Inter Milan on a permanent deal earlier this month.

The 31-year-old scored just five times for the Reds following his controversial move from Arsenal in 2018 and his £400,000-a-week wages caused friction within the United squad as the Chilean failed to vindicate the club’s decision to hand him a record salary.

Few saw such a dip coming in Sanchez’s performance after four scintillating years with Arsenal but there’s no doubt that the winger flopped in the north-west.

Veron’s two years at United were similarly peculiar as the Argentine failed to live up to his world class reputation.

The midfielder joined from Lazio and moved to Chelsea after United, before returning to Italy with Inter Milan.

And Veron believes Sanchez is similar in that his play is better suited to life in Italy.

‘I was at my best in Italy and I think that’s true of Alexis Sanchez too,’ said Veron.

‘I watched Sanchez play here, he’s got enormous talent and is fantastic for Chile,” Veron told reporters at a press conference for the Enel Cup 2020.

‘Personally, I had some ups and downs at Manchester United, but I was at my best in Italy. I believe a player really finds he belongs in one league more than another. I know I did and I think that’s true of Alexis Sanchez too.

‘He is a great representative not just of Chile, but also all of South American football’.

United had the opportunity of setting up a Europa League final against Sanchez’s Inter but they blew it with a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on Sunday.

Sanchez is the third United player to join the club in the last 18 months following Ashley Young’s move in January and Romelu Lukaku’s transfer last summer.
