However, his powerful strike beyond Samir Handanovic wasn’t enough for the Bundesliga side as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in Dusseldorf, with Nicolo Barella and Romelu Lukaku scoring for Antonio Conte’s side.

It’s a result that could be celebrated by Chelsea fans, with Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol telling Sky Sports earlier on Monday that the path will be clear for the Blues to sign the 21-year-old ‘as soon as Bayer Leverkusen are knocked out of the Europa League’.

Solhekol told Sky Sports: “It could be getting very, very close because – first of all, let’s say that he wants to move to Chelsea.

“We’ve said that Jadon Sancho wants to move from Borussia Dortmund. I think Havertz wants to come to the Premier League even more than Jadon Sancho does.

“He is really desperate to sign for Chelsea, but the situation is that Bayer Leverkusen are in the Europa League. They’re playing against Inter Milan tonight.

“If they win the Europa League they get into the Champions League for next season. That is why he’s still playing for them.

“Now, he will leave as soon as they are knocked out of the Europa League. Obviously that could happen tonight if they lose to Inter Milan, but again price is the problem.

“Dortmund want €120m for Sancho, Leverkusen want €100m for Havertz but I think Leverkusen will be willing to negotiate. I think they will be easier to negotiate with than Dortmund will be over Sancho.

“Rudi Voller, their sporting director, has come out in the past few days and said ‘He is not leaving unless we get our valuation of €100m.’

“He’s gone on to describe Havertz as the greatest ever player to play for Bayer Leverkusen, which is a bit of a controversial statement because they’ve had some great players in the past like Michael Ballack, Toni Kroos, Bernd Schuster, but Rudi Voller is obviously a good salesman as well as a great former Germany striker.

“He is saying that they want €90m for Havertz, but I think the important thing, if you’re a Chelsea fan, is that my information is that he really, really wants to move to Stamford Bridge and to play for Frank Lampard.

“And I think that deal could happen pretty soon.”
