Zinedine Zidane claims Gareth Bale was dropped due to a ‘technical decision’ for Real Madrid’s final La Liga match of the season on Sunday evening.

Madrid had already secured the La Liga title as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Leganes, who have been relegated from the Spanish top flight.

Bale’s muted celebrations during Madrid’s title victory last week were noticed by many, while the Wales international kept also his distance from Zidane as he was lifted in the air by Madrid’s players.

Bale had also caused friction after he was spotted joking around on Madrid’s bench earlier this month.

The 31-year-old was left out of the squad completely for Madrid’s trip to Leganes, while James Rodriguez was absent once again due to ‘personal reasons’.

Asked to explain the absences of Rodriguez and Bale, Zidane replied: ‘You know what happened with one.

‘The other is a technical decision.’

Zidane is also hopeful that Eden Hazard can recover from his latest injury ahead of Madrid’s Champions League clash with Manchester City on August 7.

‘Eden has had some trouble,’ said Zidane.

‘Hopefully with this break, with this time when we can recover, I hope he can be fully recovered.

‘It is not a holiday that we have now.

‘Now, I don’t think about City. We want to disconnect a bit, then we will have all the time to think. We will have 10-15 days to think. We will disconnect.

‘Until the last second we are going to fight to go to that final, but now you don’t have to think about the Champions League. It is time to rest and think about gathering strength.

‘The final stretch has been a tremendous effort. Now we all need some relaxation. This is what we are going to do.

‘After these four or five days off, we go back and think about the Champions League. No stress or worries.’
