Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says there’s still time for Angel Gomes to sign a new deal at the club after describing the midfielder as a ‘top kid’.

The Norwegian appeared to confirm Gomes’ exit from Old Trafford on Monday when he revealed that the midfielder had yet to sign a new deal, with his current one set to expire in 48 hours’ time.

Gomes is considered one of the finest prospects to emerge from United’s academy in recent years but he’s struggled to make an impact in the albeit limited appearances he’s had in recent seasons.

Nevertheless, United had been keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal and despite Solskjaer’s pessimism, the Norwegian admits there’s still time to clinch an extension.

‘Well, you can ask Angel why he’s not signed,’ Solskjaer said.

‘He’s not signed yet, there’s still [time]… I don’t know where [or] what the talks are behind the scenes.

‘Angel’s a top kid. Of course there’s people around him that advises him to do different things.

‘If he doesn’t sign, all the best to Angel. I’m going to follow his career if he doesn’t sign for us. If he signs for us, let’s kick on.’

United will be loathed to lose such a prospect after having their fingers burnt by Paul Pogba’s departure in 2012.

The Frenchman joined Juventus for a minimal fee after the midfielder grew frustrated at a lack of opportunities at Old Trafford.

He did of course return in 2016 but for a world record fee of £89million.
