Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options this summer and sign a player to provide competition and cover for Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The Premier League champions-elect were held to a goalless draw by Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday, with Salah an unused substitution due to his lack of match fitness.

Speaking after the stalemate at Goodison Park, Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘The front-three are as good as anyone in Europe, we know that. But whenever one of them hasn’t been playing, there is a massive drop-off.

‘I went back to a game earlier in the season when Liverpool dropped points against Manchester United, and that was another game where Salah wasn’t playing.

‘They don’t miss too many games, but when they do there’s a big drop-off. That’s why I still feel they need to strengthen their front three.

‘Divock Origi is a legend for Liverpool because of the big goals he’s scored, but that isn’t quite the quality Liverpool need.

‘The front three are very robust and don’t miss too many games but if they were to lose one of those for a length of time it could cause a real problem next season.’

After Sunday’s draw with Everton, Liverpool have moved to within five points of the Premier League title.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said: ‘It was a real fight. Both teams showed they understand it is a derby. Intense, physical, all players were all in.

‘We didn’t have enough chances. Most of the time we were dominant but they had the biggest chance.

‘Everton defended really well and we were not smart enough to use the space. That is normal when you start to play again. Football looks slightly different, but I take that.’

Liverpool welcome Crystal Palace to Anfield on Wednesday evening.
