Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United are crying out for reinforcements in midfield and has urged his former club to consider moves for Saul Niguez, Thomas Partey and Wilfred Ndidi in the summer transfer window.

Last week, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward warned supporters that United’s transfer activity will not be ‘business as usual’ as a result of the financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the Red Devils continue to be linked with some of the biggest names in world football, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperate to bolster his squad over the coming months.

Borussia Dortmund and England wonderkid Jadon Sancho has been identified as United’s number one attacking target and the likes of Jack Grealish and James Maddison are being eyed as possible additions in midfield.

But ex-United and England defender Ferdinand has identified three alternatives who he feels would strengthen Solskjaer’s side in the middle of the park.

‘I’d maybe go get Partey from Atletico Madrid or Ndidi from Leicester,’ Ferdinand told The Beautiful Game when asked which players United should be looking to bring in this summer.

‘I like Saul Niguez. He’s a very, very good player in midfield.

‘And then a centre-back, they still need a centre-back. Whether you go for a young one like a Ben Godfrey or someone like [Kalidou] Koulibaly.

‘I don’t know, it’s difficult.’

Atletico Madrid midfielder Partey has been heavily linked with Arsenal in recent days after his father claimed talked were underway over a switch to the Emirates.

The Ghanian’s Atleti team-mate, Saul, meanwhile, has been on United’s radar for several years but the La Liga giants are not prepared to do business for anything less than his €150million (£130m) release clause.

Paul Ince believes United have no choice but to spend big this summer and, like Ferdinand, encouraged the club to make a move for Saul while discussing potential targets earlier this week.

‘You look at Manchester City. They’ve got Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva – at least three legends. It’s the same now with Liverpool. United don’t have that at the moment,’ the ex-United midfielder told The Daily Star.

‘I’ve watched Niguez for the last two or three years and I really like him. He’s got a lovely build and can score some special goals.

‘There’s a culture about him and he’s still young with plenty of potential. The thing is, he won’t be cheap – that’s for sure.

‘And, if you look to get him in, you have to think about what happens to Paul Pogba.’
