talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino has lauded Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for the ‘incredible’ way he has run the club since his takeover in 2003.
Since buying the club, the Blues have been one of the most successful clubs in England, winning five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups and three European trophies, including the Champions League.
And as well as providing the club with the financial resources to flourish, Abramovich has been lauded for the way he has handled the coronavirus crisis – which has brought all football to an unprecedented standstill.
Whilst several Premier League clubs clubs have been criticised for furloughing staff at the taxpayers’ expense, Chelsea have made no such move and drew praise for making their Millennium Hotel available to the NHS in the early days of the crisis.
The club has also teamed up with Refuge, the domestic abuse charity to raise funds for those suffering during the pandemic.
And former striker Cascarino, who scored eight goals in 40 league appearances at Stamford Bridge from 1992-1994, believes the Russian tycoon has led by example in comparison to other top flight club owners.
Give COVID-19 the red card
The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…
STAY AT HOME. Only leave for the following purposes:
- to shop for basic essentials – only when you really need to
- to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with
- for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person
- to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary

The government has also issued further detail on what we can do during lockdown.
Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading.
“There’s been a lot of speculation about Roman Abramovich over the years but I look at the amount of things he’s done well at Chelsea,” Casc told talkSPORT.
“He’s always been first to do gestures such as using the Millennium Hotel for the NHS and always been at the forefront of Chelsea’s expectations.
“I think he’s been an incredible owner for Chelsea Football Club.
Cascarino continued to suggest that Spurs fans would leap at the chance to have an owner like Abramovich.
He added: “I’ve got a mate who’s a Spurs fan and he’s no fan of Abramovich and I said to him: ‘If he’s your owner you probably would have won five Premier League titles by now.’
“He has done the right thing in many years, he handled many things the right way – like the transfer ban – he’s led the club brilliantly.
“He takes a lot of stick for previous stuff he’s done but since he’s come to these shores he’s been exceptional in running the football club.”
