Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reportedly reached out to Kylian Mbappe’s father – who is also his agent – to gauge the PSG striker’s interest in moving to Anfield this summer.

The World Cup winner is one of Europe’s biggest talents, topping the Ligue 1 scoring charts with 18 goals and five assists this season while he has also netted five times in the Champions League.

Mbappe became the second most expensive player ever when he moved from Monaco to Paris two years ago, having initially joined on loan, though he only has two years remaining on his current deal.

Talks over a renewal have stalled and the 21-year-old is believed to be considering his options, tempted by the opportunity to test himself in a more competitive league.

He has been heavily linked with Real Madrid – with compatriot Zinedine Zidane a huge fan – while speculation linking Mbappe with Liverpool has swirled for some time, with the Frenchman mooted as a potential replacement for Sadio Mane.

Now French outlet Le10 Sport claim Klopp is ramping up Liverpool’s charm offensive and has phoned Mbappe’s father, Wilfried, to sound him out over a potential move.

Liverpool have a significant budget after spending frugally in the past two transfer windows, while fees across the market are expected to drop considerably due to the coronavirus crisis.

Klopp was keen to get an idea of Mbappe’s intentions, and whether he is ready to leave PSG, and would be willing to sanction an enormous, club-record move for the Frenchman who is likely to win multiple Ballon d’Or awards over the next decade.

PSG have feared Mbappe would leave the club for some time, particularly after he intimated he would look for a new challenge elsewhere last summer after winning the Ligue Player and Young Player of the Year awards.

‘I think that it is a very important moment for me as I feel that I am approaching a first, or second, turning point in my career,’ he said. ‘I have discovered a lot of things here and I feel that it is perhaps time for greater responsibility.

‘I hope that it will be with PSG, which would be with great pleasure, or maybe elsewhere with a new project. However, I would like to say thank you.’
