John Terry has revealed how Chelsea’s players were left shell-shocked by Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking after the Italian confirmed his demise on the team bus.

The Italian led Chelsea to the Premier League and FA Cup double during his first season at Stamford Bridge but ended the following campaign empty handed and paid the price with Roman Abramovich ruthlessly ending Ancelotti’s two year stay in west London.

Chelsea were beaten 1-0 at Everton on the final day of the 2010/11 season and Ancelotti was fired following a brief phone conversation in the Goodison Park tunnel.

Terry, who served as captain under Ancelotti, recalled he and his fellow players were stunned by Abramovich’s decision and attempted to raise the spirits of their manager by treating him to a night out in London.

‘Ancelotti had a kind of quiet leadership and a really good way about him,’ Terry told the Lockdown Tactics podcast.

‘He’d come down to the back of the bus after games, sit there, talk to the lads. Even when he got sacked at Chelsea. We played Everton away and he got sacked we were sitting on the bus on the way home and he’s gone ‘I’ve just had a call, I’m sacked’.

We were like ‘no way, no chance, no way when we get back to London we are taking you for a night out!’ Literally all the lads were there, he turned up and it was probably the hardest thing for him to do.

‘Still now when I talk to him he remembers how everyone turned up and it kind of showed what he meant to us but he had a great rapport with the lads.’
