RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner will join Liverpool if the club pay his £52million release clause before it expires on June 15, according to reports.

The Reds have been in hot pursuit of the 24-year-old forward, with the coronavirus stopping boss Jurgen Klopp from meeting the Germany international to convince him of a move to Anfield.

According to Sky Sports, Werner is keen on a move to Liverpool if they trigger his buy-out clause prior to its expiry in less than two months.

The report also states that the Reds are hesitant of making the transfer happen before June 15, as they were when targeting the striker in the January window.

Given his sublime record of 21 goals in 25 league games this season, the German club could raise their demands in the future.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are also interested in acquiring Werner’s services, but Leipzig’s head of football Oliver Mintzlaff denied any conversations between clubs have taken place.

In an interview with General-Anzeiger last week, he said: ‘Neither Jurgen Klopp nor [Bayern chief] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge contacted me.

‘We are happy that we were able to extend the contract with him until 2023.

‘He played a really strong first half of the season and was not the only reason why we won the autumn championship because of his 18 goals.

‘We also believe that we are still a very good stage for Timo Werner on which he can develop as a German international.’

Chelsea are also believed to have made ‘direct contact’ to bring the striker to Stamford Bridge, and could rival the Reds for his signature.

Werner dropped a hint that a move to Merseyside is his preferred choice, admitting in February that he was ‘very proud’ to be linked with a team as good as Liverpool.
